IETLS Listening

The IELTS listening test allows 30 minutes and an additional 10 minutes for transferring your answers. This test is exactly the same whether you are doing the academic or general training module.

Broken down into four sections, each providing a recording, you must then answer a series of questions for each. Each recording is done with a range of native language speakers, accents, and different voices. Most importantly, you will only hear each recording once.

The purpose of this test is to evaluate the understanding of ideas and facts, grasp the opinions and attitudes of the speaker, and process the development of ideas discussed.

  • Section 1: A recording of an everyday informal conversation between two people within a social setting, such as a conversation with a travel agent.
  • Section 2: A recording of a monologue set in an everyday social context, such as a speech.
  • Section 3: A recording of up to four people in a group discussion set in an educational setting, such as discussing an assignment.
  • Section 4: A recording of a monologue on an academic subject such as a university lecture.

Common Mistakes in the IELTS Reading Exam

The IELTS listening test allows 30 minutes and an additional 10 minutes for transferring Common mistakes in this test include not finishing the entire audio before choosing answers, as it can be very easy to get distracted with non-relevant content. Many people who sit this test can make assumptions about the audio, so it’s crucial to analyze the content thoroughly before making your choices.

IETLS Reading

Taking around 60 minutes, this component features 40 questions. There are three long texts which may be excerpts from books, journals, magazines, or newspapers and can be factual, analytical, or descriptive.

The purpose of this test is to evaluate reading for understanding, detail, recognizing attitudes, opinions, and purpose.

Academic Reading Test

This version has texts specifically selected for a professional audience or those seeking to further their studies in an academic environment.

General Reading Test

This version has passages selected for the types of encounters you are likely to have daily within an English-speaking environment.

Common Mistakes in the IELTS Reading Exam

Common errors on this portion of the exam are using a limited vocabulary and using contractions that look informal. You must demonstrate you have a wide range of vocabulary and avoid making the mistake of not spelling out words in full, so no ‘haven’t, wasn’t, or didn’t.’

IELTS Writing

Comprised of two tasks, the writing test has a total time of 60 minutes. In both modules, Task 1 must be a minimum of 150 words, and Task 2 must be a minimum of 250 words.

Academic Writing

Task 1: A chart, graph, table, or diagram is presented, and you will need to analyze and describe the information provided in your own words using formal vocabulary.

Task 2: A short essay-style response to a passage on a general interest topic using formal vocabulary.

General Training Writing

Task 1: Using a personal, formal or semi-formal style, you must write a letter based on a situation presented, such as requesting information or explaining a scenario.

Task 2: A short essay response to a passage provided a more personal or casual style.

Common Mistakes in the IELTS Writing Exam

Some common pitfalls in this exam section are failure to provide sufficient evidence for your point of view and repeating the content already provided in the passages. It is very important to show off your own vocabulary and demonstrate a range of words and descriptors along with compelling evidence to back up your argument.

IELTS Speaking

This is the shortest component overall and takes 11 – 14 minutes. Both academic and general modules take the same test, which is done face-to-face as an oral interview.

Comprised of three parts, you can expect this part of your exam to be recorded.

Part 1: General questions about yourself and easily familiar topics about your personal life and interests.

Part 2: Having been given a topic on a card, you take one minute to prepare a two-minute discussion on the topic. Your examiner will ask a few questions at the end as well.

Part 3: Taking around 4 – 5 minutes, this section is where the examiner will ask further questions on the topic from Part 2. This is where you expand on ideas and engage in discussion.

Common Mistakes:

There is no way to prepare for this section of the exam, and memorization is of no help. It is also important to avoid Yes or No answers since the examiner will employ open-ended questions that demand you expand and provide as much detail as possible.

Why Is It Important To Do Well On the IELTS Exam?

Specifically, the IETLS exam is important in Canada because:
A score of 6 or higher in all categories is required for the permanent resident visa through the express entry program
A score of 7 or higher in all categories is generally sufficient for your university application (every school and program will have more specific requirements)

The IELTS is one of the most important exams a non-English speaker can take to attract more international opportunities. The IELTS isn’t simply an exam but a milestone in enhancing your life with new experiences, opportunities, and quality education.
