Assessment Test

Before enrolling in a course, to help us gauge your language ability, we will arrange an assessment test for students to confirm English proficiency and areas which need improvement.

Adaptive Teaching Style For Maximize Performance

CanStar carefully and constantly monitors the progress of all students throughout the courses we provide.

Our well-qualified teachers use tests (called “standardized assessments”) and assignments, presentations, and exams (called “summative assessments”) to ensure that students develop their language skills and understanding of the language, its overall structure and content.

Our teachers regularly coach good habits to help students attain a deeper understanding of English and its proper usage.

We provide a regular monthly progress report that details every student’s study performance to parents and students.

Introduction to ELL Level 4 - Consolidation Stage

ELL4 level is a consolidation stage where materials taught in ELL1, ELL2 and ELL3 are reviewed while introducing new ideas and topics.

There are four main aspects to the course:

Listening: By now, students should be able to understand the majority of classroom content, as well as more detailed language aspects of English such as idioms and metaphorical language, as well as a variety of complex sentence structures.

Speaking: Teachers will work on students’ speaking skills, focusing on conversational patterns and pronunciation to improve effective communication. The course will encourage students to use a broader vocabulary and introduce aspects of slang, idioms, and metaphorical language. Speaking is key to effective communication, so students will need to participate in class discussions, arrange presentations, etc.

Reading: Students will have a firm grasp and understanding of most of the sentences they read but will be taught how to comprehend the implied meaning(s). Reading complex sentences will lead to developing an ability to comprehend and evaluate what has been written, then onto the analysis of the structure of an article and extraction of key information.

Writing: More detailed descriptions to express ideas will, by now, be commonplace, and teachers will also introduce abstract thinking and coach students to use content-specific vocabulary related to their ideas. Importantly, students will learn to use language better matched with their writing style more frequently in their writing and apply correct usage of tenses and grammar to essays.

Course Content

ELL4 or Preparatory Level English 10 is an ideal course for students who wish to gain an initial understanding of the main content of the English 10 course and see it as a springboard to prepare for provincial exams.

There are two parts to ELL4, namely the beginner and advanced courses.

The beginner course expands students’ vocabulary knowledge, encouraging them to improve their word usage and providing an overall reinforcement of their understanding of the language.

The advanced courses focus on general essay writing and structures, and both grammar and vocabulary courses can be tailor-made to the needs of each student.
