Introduction to ELL1 Level - Development Stages

The ELL1 level is ideal for students who are just beginning to study English and are not yet confident or proficient in using the language.

There are four main aspects to the course:

Listening: Initially, students will have a limited understanding of many of the words they are hearing and cannot quickly respond to or answer questions from the teacher. The teacher will overcome such issues by simplifying verbal communications or using body language to ensure students understand.

Conversation: This course mainly aims to develop basic and daily conversation skills as most students at the ELL1 level are only just beginning to use English conversational skills. The curriculum will focus on establishing a solid foundation with basic vocabulary and improving its usage, helping students practice how to speak in short and complete sentences and, where appropriate, making sure pronunciation is correct.

Reading: As students are still in the early developmental stages of their reading skills, most can only spell simple words, so the ELL1 curriculum uses attractive illustrations, photographs or pictures to supplement reading skills. Students will be taught to find specific details in simple sentences so that they can answer direct questions.

Writing: Most students beginning this course can usually only write short sentences. ELL1 teaches students how to analyze a topic, hone into the essay’s main idea, and organize an essay’s structure. As a result, students will be able to write complete sentences and use correct grammar and tenses in their essays.

Course Content

As part of the ELL course, ELL 1 has been carefully designed for students with a basic understanding of English. Basic grammar (such as nouns, prepositions, subject-verb agreement) is one of the main subjects being taught, and students will also learn how to describe people, places, things, and talk about time in the context of a sentence or essay.

ELL1 students will be taught relatively simple sentence structures, including requests, how to ask questions, and negations and imperatives.
