AP Calculus

AP Calculus AB

Students wishing to get into competitive programs in well-respected US colleges or Canadian universities need to seriously consider taking the AP Calculus AB course. A high exam score demonstrates strong numerical ability and aptitude. The course will prepare you for a good understanding of university-level first-semester calculus.

Students wishing to take AP Calculus AB should have a good understanding of algebra, geometry and trigonometry, as well as high school math 11 and 12. They will:

  • work with functions represented in graphical, numerical, and analytical ways;
  • understand the meaning of and use the derivative in terms of a rate of change and local linear approximation;
  • understand definite integrals, in terms of Riemann sums as well as net accumulation of change;
  • understand the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus and how they relate to derivatives and the definite integral;
  • model a differential equation, an integral or a physical situation with a function;
  • utilize technology to help confirm conclusions to various equations and understand how to interpret results to mathematical problems;
  • work out the rationality of solutions, including relative accuracy and units of measurement;
  • develop an understanding of calculus as an interlinked body of knowledge and as a human accomplishment.

AP Calculus AB subjects include:

  • Unit 1: Limits and Continuity
  • Unit 2: Differentiation: Definition and Fundamental Properties
  • Unit 3: Differentiation: Composite, Implicit, and Inverse Functions
  • Unit 4: Contextual Applications of Differentiation
  • Unit 5: Analytical Applications of Differentiation
  • Unit 6: Integration and Accumulation of Change
  • Unit 7: Differential Equations
  • Unit 8: Applications of Integration

Calculus is not an easy subject, and grasping concepts and learning in a class setting can be challenging for many. Many students require a refresher on concepts learned earlier in high school.

Given the popularity of AP Calculus among university applicants, the stakes are high when it comes to earning an excellent score of 5 in the program and how it can benefit one’s university application.

Personal one-on-one and small group tutoring can help students focus and receive the tutor’s undivided attention, thereby greatly improving the student’s chances of success in Calculus studies.
